Restoration of the Alexander/Gunn farmhouse has just been completed and has recently received a British Columbia Heritage Society Award of Outstanding Achievement. The simple Frontier style farmhouse was built by the Alexander family in 1884 followed by a more ornate Victorian addition in 1891. The Gunn family took possession of the farm in 1903 and made changes to suit their needs over time. The various stages of the house were preserved to represent the two major occupancies. During removal of interior lathe and plaster the original construction sequencing was revealed. The west wing had been built first as a 3 room farmhouse and the east wing was built later and butted to the exterior of the existing building, enlarging the house to ten rooms including a bunkhouse above the kitchen for farm workers. An outline of previously removed interior stairs leading to the room above the kitchen was also exposed. And the original underlying finish material on interior walls and ceiling was dropped siding matching the exterior. Most window and door configurations were left as found but restored to functional use. Service improvements and concealed building code upgrades were made to permit future options for private or public uses. Original colours were researched and reproduced during restoration and rehabilitation. |
